- Bow-Dacious String Band
The most well-known of our group
offerings, the Bow-Dacious String
Band consists of about 50 kids,
aged 6 through high school, who
get together weekly to play popular
music styles on violin, viola, cello,
bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo and
other stringed instruments.
Admission is open to anyone who already plays a stringed instrument. We admit new members at the
beginning of each semester. Adults who would prefer to play with their own peer groups are invited to
check out our Cretaceous Band or other adult group classes.
Although we don't accept absolute beginners into the band, admission standards are designed to be
inclusive; we have minimal skill requirements. Students are divided into groups according to age and skill
level, and each group receives instruction that is just a bit challenging for their level. Placement in groups
is at the discretion of the director.
This band performs a lot--over 100 times in the past 6 years! The repertoire is drawn almost
exclusively from traditional and popular music genres from around the world. Our emphasis is on
improvisation and applied music theory as it relates to the tunes we play.
Schedule:
We meet on Sunday afternoons: Grade school aged band members come at 3:45 and leave at 6:00.
MIddle and High School aged band members arrive at 4:45pm and leave at 7:00.
Our rehearsals are held at the Community Center for the Arts, located in the old post office building in
Urbana (at the intersection of Broadway and Elm, just north of Lincoln Square Mall). Enter the lobby, go
through the double red doors, and bear right as you go through the big room.
Winter/Spring semester will start up January 10, 2010. To join for this semester you must start coming
before the end of January.
Summer Camp:
We also have a week-long summer camp in July. 2010 dates are July 18-24.

Fee:
The fee for winter/spring semester is $125. (There are some scholarships available based on financial
